On the Novartis front...Thanks for your kind words.

On the Novartis front, I think both your arguments are neither wrong nor right. Because yes, patents are not evil, and yes, it is not wrong to sell at high prices. It is better if I take them together.

No doubt R&D is an expensive process. But the problem arises when these companies want to sell their drugs at sky-high rates. A human's life is priceless, and these companies are trying to take it literally.

Do you know that these companies conduct human trials in India and other third world countries? And again, literally at the cost of potatoes?

Protection of IP is something that is allowed for 20 years max, reason being that further development, by the same company or others will stall. What Novartis is doing in this case is trying to extend their patent beyond 20 years.

Your argument about the less rates in India is right. I worked in an outsourcing company for 6 months, and they were happy to take work at the rate of $15-16 per hour (Rs. 450 per hour). What happens to western companies trying to sell their stuff here is the opposite. But such things happen in all markets and industries. 40 years before, there were no personal computers, and today, maybe you wrote your comment from a phone! If other industries can get cheap over time or because of the competition, why can't Big Pharma?

If they wanted to make money, they could have done so by indulging in drug/weapon trafficking or some other such way. Why get in the business of saving lives, and then make it difficult all over again?KKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16778157916183036144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4687330374146987306.post-89935927391003135472013-04-07T21:25:13.221+05:302013-04-07T21:25:13.221+05:30Finally you wrote and what an article..! Quite a t...Finally you wrote and what an article..! Quite a time reading it but I am with Novartis in this war. It's because of 2 things-
R&D of such drugs is invariably an expensive process and no doubt they would want to protect their intellectual property. Secondly, in India drugs in India are sold at the rate of probably 1$ or 2$ max. For these foreign companies it is just a waste to invest in such markets. For them it is like selling potatoes and they know what they are selling is not potato! And we should not forget that they only have this patent weapon to take down rivals..the same case like apple and samsung. They are free to use it. No one can term them as "greedy" merely coz' they filed a lawsuit. And R&D is just not an expensive process. It has more complexed equations related to it. It is just not a single process, it is a series of process hard to write about in a single paper.
But beneath all of this even I can't deny that these companies are blatantly greedy and would go to any extent for earning every penny. An article in today'...Thanks for your interest.

An article in today's Hindu tells another story: that most of the research effort on Glivac was done by some US government R&D agency. If this is true, Novartis people indeed are bastards :-) (no offense to Mr. Zimmerman, I am sure he is a great researcher who means well)

http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/money-first-ethics-second/article4585536.ece

Happy Blogging to you too!KKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16778157916183036144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4687330374146987306.post-44928222838352065902013-04-06T11:53:44.124+05:302013-04-06T11:53:44.124+05:30I had very little idea about the whole issue, now ...I had very little idea about the whole issue, now am pretty much clear.
